Fire Inspections

Purpose

The Victoria Fire Marshal’s staff of highly trained inspectors are dedicated to ensure our community is safe from fire and other life safety hazards. Our inspection program utilizes locally adopted codes and ordinances that are designed to have a positive impact on businesses. The Codes are published by the International Code Council and the National Fire Protection Association.

Inspections

Inspections are also conducted for Certificates of Occupancy for altered existing structures, new construction, or those buildings with new occupants.

A few of the types of occupancies where we perform our inspections include:

  • Apartment buildings
  • Business offices
  • Daycares
  • Department stores
  • Doctor offices
  • Foster homes
  • Gas stations
  • Grocery stores
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Places of worship
  • Schools

Compliance

Compliance is achieved through the utilization of adopted codes, standards, and ordinances of the City of Victoria, NFPA National Fire Codes, and the International Fire Code. Inspections can vary from business to business, so it is imperative that our inspectors are well-versed in these nationally recognized codes.

Understanding that every business is different from the next allows us to identify target hazards and address the need for a safe working environment. Working closely with local and state agencies ensures that the proper agency is contacted for support as needed.

Fire Code Importance

As a part of our local ordinance, each structure is inspected and any hazards found are listed for the owner/occupant to be corrected. Also, the enforcement of the fire code allows for identificationInspection18 of unsafe property such as open, vacant structures, which are a danger to the community and firefighters. Several items, which are of primary importance to life safety, are fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, means of egress and other fire extinguishing systems.

Operating a successful inspection program allows for a safer place to work, shop and play. The focus of our inspection program is designed with employees, visitors and public safety professionals in mind.
